Aphonetic Words


Most Indian languages, unlike English, have a nearly phonetic spelling, so the spelling of a word is a highly reliable guide to its modern pronunciation (spelling pronunciation). English is notoriously tricky with its use of more than 19 sounds represented by 5 vowels. Below is a list of English words whose pronunciation is different from its spelling. Read related article

Most of the pronunciations are from Google & WordWeb (created by a physicist, Antony Lewis). I've been using the web & desktop versions of WordWeb dictionary since two decades.
