Gartner Magic Quadrant for Strategic Cloud Platform Services

Gartner defines strategic cloud platform services (SCPS) as standardized, automated, public cloud offerings integrating infrastructure services (e.g., computing, network and storage), platform services (e.g., application, data and value-added services such as AI/ML) and transformation services (resources to help customers adopt cloud-oriented IT delivery models).

Insights I found interesting from the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Strategic Cloud Platform Services report:

  • The eight SCPS providers & global hyperscalers featured in this Magic Quadrant control over 97% of the total CIPS market.
  • While AWS has maintained profitability and a leading global infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS) market share of over 42%, its growth rate relative to its key competitors slowed in 2023.
  • Azure public cloud market share is 26%.
  • GCP's overall market share stands at 11.5%.
  • Oracle's strategy of positioning OCI as the top cloud for Oracle software is proving effective in the market.
  • OCI's multicloud strategy integrates seamlessly with major cloud providers, offering Oracle Database on Azure and Google Cloud, supported by Exadata-based services, robust networking, and data integration, making it a strong "second cloud" option.
  • Oracle and NVIDIA partnered to deliver "sovereign AI" solutions, enabling AI model training in secure local environments.
  • IBM stands out as the only cloud provider offering IBM AIX, IBM i, and Linux on Power-based virtual instances, with support for SAP HANA, Oracle Database, and a distributed cloud option.
  • Alibaba’s GenAI strategy comprises the Qwen model family which it has made open source. The Qwen models are downloadable from Hugging Face.
  • Huawei plays a significant role in China’s expansive “One Belt One Road” initiative, directing data center infrastructure investments toward Africa, the Middle East, Oceania and Latin America.
  • Tencent Cloud provides programmable access to WeChat and QQ social networking platforms.
