Compact Business PCs Explained: Dell OptiPlex, Intel NUC and Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny Desktops Compared
For many people, a desktop computer conjures up images of a large tower sitting under a desk. Yet over the past decade, manufacturers such as Dell, Intel, ASUS, and Lenovo have shown that a capable desktop doesn't have to be much larger than a paperback book.
Compact business desktops—including the Dell OptiPlex Micro, Intel NUC (now ASUS NUC), and Lenovo ThinkCentre Tiny series such as the M700 Tiny—typically occupy just around one litre of volume, earning them the nickname "1L PCs."
Despite their small size, these machines often include desktop-class Intel Core processors, support up to 32–64 GB of RAM (depending on the model), NVMe SSD storage, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and the ability to drive multiple monitors. Many consume only 10–30 watts during typical office work, making them significantly more energy efficient than traditional desktop towers.
Originally designed for enterprise environments where desk space and manageability were important, these systems have found a second life among home users. Refurbished models such as the ThinkCentre M700 Tiny and Dell OptiPlex Micro are popular for home labs, software development, media servers, Home Assistant, Docker, Proxmox, and lightweight virtualization.
The Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing), introduced in 2012, played a major role in popularizing the ultra-compact PC category. Although Intel exited the NUC business in 2023, ASUS continues the product line with newer processors and modern connectivity under the ASUS NUC brand.
One of the biggest advantages of these compact desktops is their balance of size, reliability, and upgradeability (mainly RAM, SSD). Unlike many mini-PCs built for consumers, business models are designed for continuous operation, easy servicing, and long product lifecycles. Memory and storage can usually be upgraded in minutes, extending their useful life.
Compared to traditional tower desktops, they offer fewer upgrade options though, limited internal storage, no support for full-size graphics cards or PCIe expansion cards, and may throttle under prolonged heavy workloads due to their compact cooling systems.
For students, developers, and hobbyists, these tiny desktops demonstrate that you don't need a bulky tower to build a capable workstation. Whether it's writing code, running virtual machines, experimenting with Linux, or hosting services at home, these miniature powerhouses continue to prove that good things really do come in small packages.
