Maareesan (2025) Mapped with Datawrapper Locator Map
I enjoy films that take you on a journey, where the changing landscape becomes almost another character in the story.
The film brings together two very different characters, played by two seasoned actors who make an interesting pairing. Vadivelu brings his distinctive screen presence and comic timing, while Fahadh Faasil lends his trademark intensity and unpredictability. Their performances keep you invested as the story moves between humour, mystery and suspense.
The journey takes the characters across Tamil Nadu, from Palayamkottai and Nagercoil in the south, through Madurai, and onwards to places including Echampatti, Veeraganur, Bodhamalai, Tiruvannamalai and Coimbatore. There are unexpected detours, connections to the characters' pasts and geographical twists that make the journey as intriguing as the story itself.
To make better sense of this zigzagging geography, I plotted the locations on a Datawrapper Locator Map. The map turns the film's many stops into something you can explore visually, helping you follow the journey across Tamil Nadu without giving away the story.
I jotted down each location, their latitude and longitude in a CSV file & dropped the file into the mapping wizard interface. Datawrapper lets you add point markers for places, lines to connect locations and arrows to indicate direction. Tooltips can provide additional context without cluttering the map.
If you enjoy movies and maps, take a look at the route. And if it piques your curiosity, Maareesan is available on Netflix in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi with subtitles in English and other international languages.

Maareesan (2025), the Tamil comedy-thriller starring Vadivelu and Fahadh Faasil, is one such film. It also gave me an excuse to indulge in another interest: mapping places and turning a movie's geography into a visualisation.

In the Refine tab of the Datawrapper charting wizard, the look of the map can be customised. I choose to have minimal labels. Here's how it finally looks -
