This Week I Learned -
* When you migrate applications to Azure, you can continue to use your security information and event management (SIEM) software, combining cloud and on-premises security information into your existing system of monitoring and control. You can also take advantage of Azure SEIM and other security capabilities, including Azure Sentinel, an artificial intelligence-based SEIM, Azure Advanced Threat Protection for network security and Azure Key Vault for secure storage of application credentials and data.
* Microsoft's partnership with internet service providers (ISPs), internet exchange providers (IXPs), and software-defined cloud interconnect (SDCI) providers worldwide enables Azure Peering Service to extend the optimized path to the customer network and the last mile.
* Operations Management Suite (OMS) was a bundling of the following Azure management services for licensing purposes:
- Application Insights
- Azure Automation
- Azure Backup
- Log Analytics
- Site Recovery
OMS bundling is no longer available for new customers. Log Analytics and Application Insights have been consolidated into Azure Monitor to provide a single integrated experience for monitoring Azure resources and hybrid environments. Log Analytics in now called Azure Monitor logs. Azure Log Analytics helps you store, index, query and derive insights from this data collected from various data sources using a simple query language known as Kusto query language or KQL. Log analytics service aggregates data from various data sources and solutions and turns them into records and stores it in a central storage called the Log analytics workspace.
* Azure Offline Backup with Azure Data Box enables offline initial backup of large datasets (up to 80 TB per server). Subsequent backups will take place over the network. Order and receive your Azure Data Box based on the amount of data you want to backup from a server. Order an Azure Data Box Disk if you want to backup less than 7.2 TB of data. Order an Azure Data Box to backup up to 80 TB of data. Azure Data Box and Azure Backup will automatically upload the data to the Azure Recovery Services Vault to seed large initial backups.
* All the resources in Kubernetes that include Pods, Configurations, Deployments, Volumes, etc., can simply be expressed in a YAML file.
* Introduced in November 2016, Microsoft Teams is the successor to Skype for Business. Teams has integrations to nearly all the major DevOps and ALM toolsets. The vehicle for developing new capabilities for Teams is the app. Microsoft Teams apps are web apps, so you can use any web application technology or hosting platform to build and deploy them.
* Data Analyst typically is the bridge between business and technology stakeholders
* Kahoot! lets you create, share and play learning games or trivia quizzes
* localStorage is two orders of magnitude faster than document.cookie
* VxRail is Dell EMC’s hyper-converged offering. Hyper-converged appliances allow a datacenter in a box approach, rather than buying servers, storage and hypervisor separately hyper-converged appliances bundle the components into one package. The storage, compute and hypervisor components used by VXRail 4.5 are as follows:
- Storage – VMware vSAN 6.6
- Compute – 14th Generation DellEMC PowerEdge servers
- Hypervisor – vSphere 6.5
* Focus “learning time” on things that compound....in the limited flexible time that I have, I think the rule of thumb is to focus on things that could trigger a virtuous cycle. One perfect place to start is becoming a faster typer. Building lasting relationships is also a compounding activity because it gives you access to more people who can help you get things done more quickly. Consuming media (books, blogs, whatever) is not inherently a compounding thing. Only if you have some kind of method to reflect, to digest, to incorporate your knowledge into your thoughts.
* Estimates serve more for creating pressure than for project planning
* Unless you are an extremely gifted raconteur, people who talk for more than roughly half minute at a time are boring and often perceived as too chatty. Filibustering is usually a conversational turn-off, and may result in both of you deteriorating into alternating monologues. And that certainly will do little to move the conversation or your relationship forward. One reason some people are long-winded is because they’re trying to impress their conversational counterpart with how smart they are, often because they don’t actually feel that way underneath. If this is the case for you, realize that continuing to talk will only cause the other person to be less impressed. Even 20 seconds of talking can be a turn off if you don’t include the other person in the conversation. To avoid that, ask questions, try to build on what they say, and look for ways to include them in the conversation so it is a genuine dialogue instead of a diatribe - HBR
* Currency trader George Soros bet against the British Pound and made over $1 billion. In 1992, George Soros was 62 years old and led the Quantum Fund, a hedge fund he founded in 1970 that bet on macroeconomic trends. George Soros led a group of traders to break the entire foreign currency system of Great Britain—and profit handsomely at the expense of British taxpayers and others who were on the wrong side of the greatest financial bet of the 20th century. British financial history now refers to September 17, 1992, as "Black Wednesday". Soros’s Quantum Fund had approximately $15 billion betting that the pound would fall versus other currencies - Priceonomics
* In 1989, Vembu graduated out of IIT Madras, following up with a PhD in Princeton and then a job as a wireless systems engineer at Qualcomm for two years. In 1996, along with two of his brothers (he has three of them) and three friends, he co-founded AdventNet. In 2009, he renamed the company Zoho Corp to reflect the transition from a software company serving network equipment vendors to an innovative online applications provider. Zoho has earned the distinction of being the first software product unicorn, and Forbes in 2019 valued Vembu’s 88 percent stake at $1.83 billion. As of now, Zoho has two rural offices, one in Tenkasi and the other in Renigunta in Andhra Pradesh with 500 of its 9,300 employees globally working out of these - Forbes
* Chinese companies accounted for more than 70% of all smartphone shipments in India in Q4 2019, as per IDC (International Data Corporation). The total size of India’s trade with China was $87 billion in 2018-19, as per India’s Ministry of Commerce, with electronics accounting for $20.6 billion of total imports from China. Almost 90% of components used in phones that are made in India come from China - Mint
* Almost 50% of the total Income Tax returns filed in AY19, reported Income from Salaries of which more than 10% reported a Salary of between Rs. 10 to Rs. 20 lac
* India is the world's second biggest consumer of Gold
* The website of the Indian Meteorological Department provides forecasts for not only weather but also other specialized forecasts for Tourism, Highway etc
* The gentle humor in Vocabulary.com's word definitions always amazes me - An indigent person is extremely poor, lacking the basic resources of a normal life. Often the indigent lack not only money but homes.
* Jaffee said in a 2016 interview that hardship sharpened his humor. He was born in Savannah, Ga., but life grew rough during the six years of childhood he spent on a shtetl in his mother’s Zarasai — what he called “the Siberia of Lithuania” — with food in short supply and no running waters or toys....such life also bred his distrust of authority figures, leading to his eagerness to poke a satiric stick in the eye of political and social leaders.
