4 typical models with which open-source companies operate:

  • Open core
  • Professional services
  • Hosting
  • Marketplace
* Red Hat’s subscription business started as primarily a “support subscription” but evolved into a product offering over time as companies like IBM started to undercut Red Hat for support services (IBM has since acquired Red Hat).

* Mozilla generates the bulk of their $500m annual revenue by providing lead generation to search engines.

* Generative models can simulate the aging process of a face, which can be useful for matching faces across different ages. For example, a missing child's photo can be age-progressed to generate an image of what they might look like now. Besides Age Progression/Regression, Generative models can be used to generate privacy-preserving representations of faces. For example, facial images can be transformed into a privacy-preserving format, such as facial embeddings, while still enabling facial recognition without exposing personal information.  - CGPT

Arun C Murthy was the founder and architect of the Hortonworks Inc., a software company that is helping to accelerate the development and adoption of Apache Hadoop. Hortonworks was formed by the key architects and core Hadoop committers from the Yahoo! Hadoop software engineering team in June 2011.

* To protect users from being served malicious HTML or JavaScript, Apps Script uses iframes to sandbox HTML-service web apps or custom user interfaces for Google Docs, Sheets, and Forms. The sandbox imposes limitations on client-side code. The IFRAME sandbox mode is based on the iframe sandboxing feature in HTML5.  The allow-top-navigation keyword, which allows the content to navigate its top-level browsing context, is restricted and not set as an attribute in the sandbox. If you need to redirect your script, add a link or a button for the user to take action on instead.

Apps using older sandbox modes now use the newer IFRAME mode automatically. You now must override the link's target attribute using target="_top" or target="_blank".

* Having a higher level of leg muscle strength appears to be “strongly associated” with a lower risk of developing heart failure after a heart attack. The calf muscles are your “second heart,” squeezing veins in the lower legs to help return deoxygenated blood from the feet back up towards the chest. The “second heart” only starts pumping when your legs move. So it is important for people who have  to sit or stand for hours at work to walk.

* Chlorine and chloramine are toxic to fish, other aquatic animals, reptiles, and amphibians. Unlike humans and other household pets, these types of animals absorb water directly into the blood stream.

* Before she won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine, Katalin "Kati" Karikó was often introduced as the mother of (two-time) Olympic gold medalist rower Susan Francia. The work and research of Karikó laid the foundation for BioNTech and Moderna to create therapeutic mRNAs that do not induce an immune response. In 2020, Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman's technology was also used in vaccines for COVID-19 produced by Pfizer (developed by BioNTech) and through Moderna. Her persistence was noted as exceptional against the norms of academic research work conditions.

* Acute inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose, with discharge of mucus; a head cold is called coryza.

* Approximately 40-50% of your body's muscle mass is found in your legs. The largest muscle in the body is the gluteus maximus. Located at the back of the hip, it is also known as the buttocks.

* Dreaming happens mostly (though not always exclusively) during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. During REM sleep, the areas of the brain that transfer memories into long-term storage—as well as the long-term storage areas themselves—are relatively deactivated. Short-term memory areas are active during REM sleep, but those only hang on to memories for about 30 seconds. REM sleep occurs about every 90 minutes, and it lengthens as the night drags on. The first REM cycle of the night is typically just a few minutes long, but by the end of an eight-hour night of sleep, a person has typically been in the REM stage for a good 20 minutes. That’s why the strongest correlation between any life circumstance and your memory of dreams is the number of hours you’ve slept. If you sleep only six hours, you’re getting less than half of the dream time of an eight-hour night. Those final hours of sleep are the most important for dreaming. And people tend to remember the last dream of the night—the one just before waking. - Scientific American

* Cohort learning or "cohort-based learning" or simply "cohorts," is an educational approach where a group of learners progresses through a course or program together, following a predefined schedule and curriculum. In cohort-based learning, participants start and finish the program as a group, fostering a sense of community, collaboration, and shared learning experiences. - CGPT

Online investment platforms, robo-advisors, and discount brokers are becoming popular with investors who prefer a do-it-yourself approach

* Google Maps is a car-centric view of the world - Arun Ganesh, Cartographer

* "The price of excellence is eternal vigilance" - Chuck McGill, Better Call Saul

* “There are two motives for reading a book; one, that you enjoy it; the other, that you can boast about it.” - Bertrand Russell

* If you’re going to defeat someone you think is doing something terrible, and also keep a democracy, you have to build a majority and that might mean that you have to deal with people that you disagree with on some things, or many things, or even most things, but you find enough common cause that you can work with them on something. - Differ We Must: How Lincoln Succeeded in a Divided America, Steve Inskeep
