This Week I Learned -

* A data warehouse processes structured data, while a data lake processes structured, semi-structured, unstructured, and raw binary data.

* To shift security left means to implement security measures during the entire development lifecycle, rather than at the end of the cycle.

* East-west traffic, in a networking context, is the transfer of data packets from server to server within a data center. The term east-west for this type of traffic comes from network diagram drawings that usually depict local area network (LAN) traffic horizontally.

* East/west traffic is traffic flowing around the Kubernetes cluster, service-to-service or service-to-datastore.

Tailwind CSS is an open source CSS framework. The main feature of this library is that, unlike other CSS frameworks like Bootstrap, it does not provide a series of predefined classes for elements such as buttons or tables. Tailwind is designed for use with components like React, Angular, Vue, etc. Netflix uses Tailwind for Netflix Top 10 and the entire website delivers only 6.5kB of CSS over the network.

* CentOS project is the open-source, community-supported, no-cost version of Linux. CentOS reaches an end-of-life at the same time that Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 reaches an end-of-maintenance in 2024. You can convert your CentOS Linux systems onto a supported version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and execute an in-place upgrade. You can retain your existing customizations.

* Every month Maven Analytics hosts a public challenge to showcase work from data professionals around the world.

* When creating images in Bing Image Creator or Microsoft Designer, consider using the prompt structure recommended by Microsoft: adjective + noun + verb + style. Some examples of this format are:

  • Lush, terraced rice fields, glowing at sunset, landscape photography
  • Dramatic, volcanic eruption, showcasing lava flows, nature painting
  • Whimsical, treehouse village, nestled in a magical forest, fantasy art
  • Minimalist, black and white, ink wash landscape, inspired by traditional Chinese art
  • Atmospheric, 1920s detective, investigating a crime scene, digital painting

* OpenLLaMA is a permissively licensed open source reproduction of Meta AI’s LLaMA 7B and 13B trained on the RedPajama dataset.

* Voicebox is a speech generative AI model that can help with audio editing, sampling and styling built upon Meta’s non-autoregressive flow matching model. There are many exciting use cases for generative speech models, "but because of the risks of misuse, we are not making the Voicebox model or code publicly available at this time".

* If you need to understand the language spoken in a video (say it is in Spanish) posted on Twitter, type

@ezdubs_bot English Spanish

as a reply to the original tweet, and the Twitter bot ezdubs_bot will dub the voices & give you a link to download the transformed video

* For now, it’s wise to treat AI assistants as a slightly-drunk knowledgeable friend. They may offer some great advice, but don’t always trust it. - Richard Seroter

* GPT-3, GPT-4, ChatGPT, Google Bard, and others have broken out from fringe curiosity to cultural obsession. For those who view code as a commodity and engineers as cogs in a code-generating machine, LLMs will automate the assembly of derivative, unimaginative software that addresses already well understood needs with  conventional solutions. This will lead to stagnation and no sustainable gains. But for those who value innovative solutions to interesting problems—crafted with quality and validated with critical thinking—LLMs offer a subtler, more satisfying potential. Human engineers and generative AI can each bring their strengths to a hybrid partnership that prioritizes crafting secure, stable, sustainable solutions to important challenges. - Jeremy Duvall

GitHub Education provides verified Students and Teachers several benefits. GitHub Student Developer Pack offers students, real world tools for free.

* Chrome on Android does have developer tools, it's just that the way you use them is by plugging the phone into a computer which acts as a remote debugger.

* Through its collaboration with Google as part of Project Vaani, Bengaluru's research university Indian Institute of Science is now open sourcing the first set of speech data comprising over 4,000 hours across 38 languages

* The Schengen Area is an area comprising 27 European countries that have officially abolished all passport and all other types of border control at their mutual borders. Being an element within the wider area of freedom, security and justice policy of the European Union (EU), it mostly functions as a single jurisdiction under a common visa policy for international travel purposes. The area is named after the 1985 Schengen Agreement and the 1990 Schengen Convention, both signed in Schengen, Luxembourg.

* Devolution, de-evolution, or backward evolution is the notion that species can revert to supposedly more primitive forms over time. The concept relates to the idea that evolution has a purpose and is progressive, for example that feet might be better than hooves or lungs than gills. In 1857 the physician Bénédict Morel, influenced by Lamarckism, claimed that environmental factors such as taking drugs or alcohol would produce social degeneration in the offspring of those individuals, and would revert those offspring to a primitive state. Pierre Boulle's 1963 novel Planet of the Apes depicts humans as primitive animal-like beings which the apes take over as a dominant species and forming their own societies; orangutans are the politicians, gorillas are the security and police, and chimpanzees are the scientists, scholars, inventors and explorers. Kurt Vonnegut's 1985 novel Galápagos is set a million years in the future, where humans have "devolved" to have much smaller brains. Helena Blavatsky, founder of Theosophy, believed, contrary to standard evolutionary theory, that apes had devolved from humans rather than the opposite, through affected people "putting themselves on the animal level".

* More than 23,000 songs are identified each minute by Shazam and the app has been used over 70 billion times. But while using it is simple, a complex computation makes it possible. - WSJ

Most streamed languages on JioSaavn in 2022 were – Hindi, Telugu, Punjabi, English and Tamil

* The title of an article by Ivan Velichko, an engaging tech storyteller is Container Networking Is Simple! The first sentence reads - Just kidding, it's not... But fear not and read on! :-)

ASICS (founded in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka as Onitsuka Co., Ltd), Saucony (1898) and Mizuno (1906) are leading running shoe brands. Nike, Inc. (originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports) was founded to sell Onitsuka Tiger shoes in the US. When Phil Knight visited Japan in 1963, shortly after he graduated from Stanford University, he was impressed by Onitsuka Tiger shoes and immediately visited the Onitsuka Tiger office and asked to be their sales agent in the US.

Financial planning and analysis (FP&A) is a set of planning, forecasting, budgeting, and analytical activities that support a company's major business decisions and overall financial health.

Eratosthenes of Cyrene (276 BC – c. 195/194 BC) was a Greek polymath: a mathematician, geographer, poet, astronomer, and music theorist. Eratosthenes was the third librarian at the great Library of Alexandria, and he made many contributions to science. He is best known for being the first person known to calculate the circumference of the Earth (around 240 BC). In his three-volume work Geography (Greek: Geographika), he described and mapped his entire known world, even dividing the Earth into five climate zones: two freezing zones around the poles, two temperate zones, and a zone encompassing the equator and the tropics. This book is the first recorded instance of many terms still in use today, including the name of the discipline geography. Eratosthenes made several important contributions to mathematics and science, and was a friend of Archimedes. He was a figure of influence in many fields who yearned to understand the complexities of the entire world.

* Eratosthenes calculated the Earth's circumference with a high precision...2,200 years ago. Now, we live in an age where multi-billion-dollar pieces of machinery are looking for the Higgs boson. We're discovering particles that may travel faster than the speed of light, and all of these discoveries are made possible by technology that's been developed in the last few decades. But for most of human history, we had to discover these things using our eyes and our ears and our minds. - How simple ideas lead to scientific discoveries

* The Cornell Note-taking Method helps with memorising, synthesising, and summarising.

Tailwinds are bad on take-off and landing, but are good in flight. In sailing, a headwind may make forward movement difficult, and necessitate tacking into the wind.

* HLA-B27 is a blood test to look for human leukocyte antigen B27 protein that is found on the surface of white blood cells. A positive test means HLA-B27 is present. It suggests a greater-than-average risk for developing or having certain autoimmune disorders. An autoimmune disorder is a condition that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue.

* The concentrations of criteria pollutants (like SO2, NO2, CO and suspended particulate matter PM2.5, PM10) in the ambient air are periodically measured and reported in the form of Air Quality Index. It involves setting up static monitoring stations comprising high grade scientific equipment. Such monitoring stations are generally sparsely distributed across a city. Air quality is extremely dynamic and can vary drastically between locations that are barely a few hundred meters apart. At present, India has a total of 232 Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring stations across 129 cities.  In India, the cost of setting up one monitoring station could be as much as INR 1.5 Crores (∼USD 200,000). With the advent of technology, low-cost, small-footprint sensors for measuring air quality are flooding the market. Various studies have shown the feasibility of using these sensors as a surrogate for the ones used in reference monitoring stations - ScienceDirect

* Using data science and IoT,  Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) researchers have developed a low-cost mobile air pollution monitoring framework in which, pollution sensors mounted on public vehicles can dynamically monitor the air quality of an extended area at high spatial and temporal resolution.

* 57% of adults with type 2 diabetes don’t know they have it, and over the past three decades, the number of type 1 diabetes patients in India has increased by 150%. I believe that the combination of diabetes and obesity will result in “diabesity” which is probably going to be the biggest epidemic in human history. Indians are more susceptible to diabetes due to insulin resistance, genetic predisposition and a rapid epidemiological transition.  - Rajeev Sibal, President – India Region Formulation (IRF), Lupin

* Under the Employee Provident Fund & Miscellaneous Provisions Act, a company should deposit the provident fund money for a month by the 15th of the next month. Under the Act, employees have the right to file a complaint with the EPFO against the employer for delayed payments. The EPFO system also throws up a list of defaulters on a monthly basis.

* Some Brahmin castes are OBCs in UP; similarly, the entire Vaishya community is in OBC list in Bihar. However, in several other states, they come under the general caste category. There are several castes which are not in the central OBC list but under state OBC lists.
