This Week I Learned - Week 43 2025

Image
This Week I Learned -  * AWS supports more than a third of the 100,000 busiest websites in the world. * AWS experienced a significant global outage that disrupted various online platforms, including social media, gaming, and financial services for about 8 hours. The company traced the issue to a DNS resolution problem in the US-EAST-1 Region, caused by an error in Amazon's EC2 internal network. This affected services like DynamoDB, SQS, Amazon Connect, and others. According to Amazon’s service status page, 37 AWS services were impacted, including prominent tools like AWS Lambda, Amazon CloudFront, Amazon EC2, AWS Systems Manager, Amazon SageMaker, Amazon API Gateway, AWS Security Token Service, Amazon Connect, and Amazon VPC Lattice. * US-EAST-1 location in northern Virginia is the oldest and largest site for AWS. The site suffered outages in 2021 and 2020. * The AWS outage disrupted several online services for hours, affecting platforms like Amazon, Alexa, Duolingo, Snapchat, Fort...

This Week I Learned - Week 42 2025

Image
This Week I Learned -  * Google published the "Attention Is All You Need" paper in 2017 and immediately began using ‘Transformers’ in products like Search & Photos. When OpenAI's ChatGPT shook up the global tech scene in late 2022, Google's leadership sounded a 'Code Red' alert. Google had prototypes similar to ChatGPT months before its release but chose a slower rollout to carefully balance innovation with reputational risk . Google accelerated the development of the Gemini series of models and merged Google Brain and DeepMind. * Munjal Shah started Hippocratic AI in 2022, not long after OpenAI’s GPT-3 gained popularity with the public. Hippocratic AI focuses on creating a safety-first large language model (LLM) tailored for the healthcare industry. * Rishi Sunak has taken up advisory roles at tech giant Microsoft and artificial intelligence start-up Anthropic. His part-time role at Microsoft was described as providing "high- level strategic perspect...

Using GitHub Projects for Feature Planning

Image
GitHub Projects is a versatile and customizable tool for organizing and managing work on GitHub. GitHub Projects, the platform's built-in tool for task tracking, roadmaps, and agile workflows (similar to Jira or Trello), was officially introduced in May 2022 as part of GitHub's Next preview program, with general availability rolling out in late 2022. It evolved from GitHub Issues with Kanban boards, custom fields, and automation. By 2023, it became a core feature for all users. In 2024, it got AI enhancements (e.g., Copilot integration for auto-task generation), making it essential for dev teams amid 2025's AI hype. It democratized project management, helping 100M+ devs organize code sprints without third-party tools. Key points - One Project can track issues from multiple GitHub Repos

AI Coding Advice

Image
Jordan Hubbard, a Senior Director at NVIDIA and co-founder of The FreeBSD Project, shares his insights on AI coding - When you tell an AI tool to "plan", you are working a different part of the model - or even potentially a completely different model - when you are telling it to "execute".   "Deep thinking" models are better at analyzing code and planning than they are at executing.  Sometimes even "dumb" models are better at executing to a plan than the smart ones, and they are certainly CHEAPER. You MUST break planning from execution, just like you would do if you were writing the code yourself, and you must have the AI write planning files that it can follow.  If you or your devs are executing plans with the most expensive models, you're almost certainly just wasting money. You must AUDIT the code for every feature cycle.  My "flow" is basically: * Plan (write this as a .md file, save in plans/ directory) * Execute (write the co...

This Week I Learned - Week 41 2025

This Week I Learned -  * Jupyter notebooks are great for experimentation, but they don't translate well into production-ready applications. Building AI applications requires more than just good models: it requires solid architecture. - Jeremy Arancio * Opencode is an open-source AI coding agent designed for terminal use, providing assistance in code generation, debugging, and project management. opencode + GLM 4.6 is basically Claude Code (I'm using it all day), but insanely cheap + better TUI. And you can use it with your Hugging Face token now  * "The hardest part of AI isn’t the tech. It’s getting people to change how they work." - Satya Nadella  * Whitney Wolfe Herd is cofounder of Bumble, which operates online dating apps Bumble and Badoo. She is a co-founder of Tinder and was previously its Vice President of Marketing. In 2012, at age 22, Wolfe Herd joined the startup Cardify, a project led by Sean Rad through Hatch Labs IAC incubator. The project was la...

This Week I Learned - Week 40 2025

Image
This Week I Learned -  * Alibaba released weights for Qwen3-Next-80B-A3B in Instruct and Thinking variations. They incorporate some of the latest research on alternate forms of attention and mixture-of-experts approaches to use less processing power at inference. Rapidly rising demand for cheaper and faster token generation is pushing more teams to tune mixture-of-experts architectures so they use fewer active parameters. - The Batch *  NeuTTS Air is the world’s first super-realistic, on-device, TTS speech language model with instant voice cloning. Built off a 0.5B LLM backbone, NeuTTS Air brings natural-sounding speech, real-time performance, built-in security and speaker cloning to your local device - unlocking a new category of embedded voice agents, assistants, toys, and compliance-safe apps. It is optimised for on-device deployment - provided in GGML format, ready to run on phones, laptops, or even Raspberry Pis * Greater Manchester Police (GMP) suspended remote w...
