This Week I Learned:
  • When you select some text on a webpage within Chrome and right click, there is an option "Search Google for '%SELECTED.TEXT%" in the context menu. You can change your default search engine in Chrome from Google to Bing or anything else. This is possibly the only change you can make to the Chrome context menu. You can however modify the source code to change the context menu options in Chromium, the open source equivalent of Chrome.
  • Kindle Cloud Reader web app makes 'buy once, read everywhere' a reality. It utilises HTML5, jQuery and jQuery plug-ins extensively.
  • Reddit, Netflix and CERN use Cassandra for their data
  • In 1990, Berners-Lee wrote the first browser and editor, called “WorldWideWeb.app,”  which ran on a NeXT computer. WorldWideWeb.app, which took 2 months to write, was also an editor. The WorldWideWeb browser was made available on on the public Internet by FTP, and promoted on network news messages in August 1991. Mosaic, which later became Netscape, was released in 1993. The first Web site was info.cern.ch, hosted by CERN, on Tim’s desktop computer
  • Microsoft is waiving the licence fee for Windows Phone OS and offering it to at least two Indian phone makers,Lava and Karbonn, for free.  This is unprecedented. Microsoft didn't even give the OS free to Nokia, which agreed to exclusively make Windows Phone in 2011. It reportedly charged Nokia between $20 to $30 for each Lumia device the Finnish company sold.   • Kindle Previewer is a graphical user interface tool that emulates how books display across Kindle devices and apps. Kindle Previewer makes it easy for publishers to preview the layout of a book and make sure its text displays properly for any orientation or font size to ensure publishers produce and submit the highest quality Kindle books.
  • Filezilla stores FTP passwords in plain text. The XML file containing the credentials can be found in the  %APPDATA%\FileZilla folder of a Windows PC.

  • The families of most prominent Marwari businessmen migrated from the Shekhawati district of Rajasthan in the mid-19th century. Most first went to places such as Indore (in Madhya Pradesh) and Bhatinda (in Punjab) which were closer; they later headed to Kolkata and Mumbai. The shrewdest people in the markets- be it bankers or those in the equity markets such as Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Amitabh Jhunjhunwala or even Prashant Jain—are Marwaris.
