This Week I Learned - Week #1 2020
This Week I Learned -
* Some customers are using Availability zones for a combined HA and DR configuration that promises a recovery point objective (RPO) of zero. This means that you shouldn't lose any committed database transactions even in the case of disaster recovery. Microsoft recommends that you use a configuration like this only in certain circumstances. For example, you might use it when data can't leave the Azure region for security or compliance reasons.
* Azure Private Link (Preview) enables you to access Azure PaaS Services (for example, Azure Storage, Azure Cosmos DB, and SQL Database) and Azure hosted customer/partner services over a Private Endpoint in your virtual network. Traffic between your virtual network and the service traverses over the Microsoft backbone network, eliminating exposure from the public Internet.
* Currently, Azure Site Recovery supports moving VMs from one region to another but doesn't support moving within a region.
* You can now replicate and fail over virtual machines deployed in Availability Zones to other regions by using Azure Site Recovery. This capability is generally available in all regions that support Availability Zones.
* Microsoft's Developer’s Guide to Azure eBook that is updated at regular intervals has useful comparison charts like these -
* ScienceLogic provides a Hybrid IT monitoring platform. The ScienceLogic SL1 Platform uses Azure APIs, including Azure Resource Manager (ARM), to interface with Microsoft Azure.
* Sketch2Code converts hand-written drawings to HTML prototypes.
* Alexa Skills Kit now includes assistance to build skills for Hindi-speaking customers in India.
* "Spotify’s algorithmic recommendations played a big role in helping me discover new music in 2019"
* Dead Sea is called "dead" because its high salinity prevents macroscopic aquatic organisms, such as fish and aquatic plants, from living in it, though minuscule quantities of bacteria and microbial fungi are present. It is around 10 times as salty as the ocean. Israeli companies generate around US$3 billion annually from the sale of Dead Sea minerals (primarily potash and bromine), and from other products that are derived from Dead Sea Minerals. Jordanian Dead Sea mineral industries generate about $1.2 billion in sales (equivalent to 4 percent of Jordan's GDP).
* Food chemistry - Oil is a great non-polar solvent and will dissolve many flavor molecules that don't dissolve well in water. “Like dissolves like”. For instance, capsaicins from chili peppers, zingerone from ginger, piperine from black pepper, and many others, dissolve sparingly in water but well in oils. Not just hot flavors, either - limonene (citrus), carvone (S and R forms, from spearmint and caraway), and other essences are non-polar. Once dissolved, they're mobile and easier to taste.
* In terms of size, Rajasthan is comparable with Germany and Uttar Pradesh is as big as United Kingdom
* The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has granted building permissions up to 36 floors in the West Hyderabad area.
* The longer you hold onto your mutual fund units, the more tax-efficient they become. The tax on long-term gains is comparatively lower than that of the tax on short-term gains. LTCG tax is applicable on equity funds if the capital gains exceed Rs 1 lakh a year, and there is no benefit of indexation.
