The Goods and Services Tax, commonly known as GST, is an indirect tax that has replaced several other indirect taxes in India, including excise duty, VAT, and service tax. The GST Bill was enacted after its passage in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha in 2017. Subsequently, the GST legislation was implemented on July 1, 2017.

The implementation of GST has contributed to the expansion of India's tax base. With GST as a unified national tax and a centralized monitoring system, the enforcement against non-compliance is faster and more effective. Sectors that were previously unorganized, such as construction, have now been incorporated into the tax framework.
